When will blindfold become a separate variant?

To answer the title question: perhaps after players will be unable to cheat by using a physical board and set of pieces, or the end of the universe, whichever comes first.

The difference between blindfold and a variant is, that blindfold need not be played by both sides. It is very well possible and sensible that white plays blindfolded and black plays normally, while it is impossible that white plays normal chess and black plays horde.

Since when is blindfold a variant?

If you're wanting to truly test your blindfold skills without risking your blitz rating, try doing puzzles blindfolded.

Of course, blindfold is a variant on Chess.com and it works well - most players there play it fairly

Does Chess.com support blindfold puzzles? I didn't know that.
