If a piece is on a square, is it controlling it?

You know you'd really think when some other piece tries to jump into a square that you currently occupy that your own piece should be able to fight back and defend itself

Especially the king. Why do we have to worry all the time about the king's safety? If it has all that much power shouldn't it be able to fend for itself?
