So I know a few general rules about pawn breaks, those mainly being :
1. Open up positions when you have better activity and king saftey
2. Look to attack pawn chains at their base
Quite often when I am watching videos of professional players (GMs, IMs etc.) they say things like “I will be very happy if I get this break in” and I couldn’t really understand why that was seeing that it didn’t really seem to adhere to either of these rules and it also seemed somewhat weakening to his king. So I guess the question I’m asking is what makes a pawn break good and what makes one bad, is there anything else I should be considering?
