Chess as part of a school curriculum

Chess can be played or learned outside, indoors, during lunch time, after school or during normal school hour classes, like during a grade 3 or 4 math class.

In general, how is chess learned in your country?

1. Are there countries that offer chess periods in their school curriculum?

2. Which countries makes chess compulsory in schools ?
In highschool we choose sports like soccer, netball etc but there is a option to play Chess. (I don't know if its in other schools but I'm in Australia)
We had a very casual chess club, no formal training. I could see the benefit of a chess class being a lot like music classes, training the brain to think differently, and much more affordable than the music stuff. Why not?
@gbtami Do you think it's good for the kids in Hungary? Did you participate in those classes back in the day?
In my middle school one of the teachers forbade me and my friend from playing chess during recess because some dickheads would flip our board so we'd get into fights. Fucking teachers lol.

our school has a chess club, and we go to local tournaments, practice etc. but it is not part of the curriculum, which really sucks because we have some really stupid people in our world that need to learn some basic thinking skills, and how to handle certain situations.
I know that there are some schools in the US where chess is taught as a class. I was interviewing for a Charter School Network in New York City where chess classes are required for grades K-2 two days a week. From grades 3-12 it's an elective class. They go to regional, state. and national tournaments. However, this is very rare. Most chess programs in the U.S. are after school clubs.
